How To Load A Tape Gun

Read our blog for instructions on how to load your tape gun correctly for rapid and efficient box sealing.
Tape Gun

Using a tape gun makes sealing cardboard boxes quick and easy. The only tricky bit is ensuring you have loaded the tape into the dispenser correctly so it works as efficiently as possible.

Messing around with tape can be fiddly and time-consuming. Following these easy loading instructions will ensure that anyone who needs to tape boxes can get it right every time, boosting speed and efficiency.

Loading your Packing Tape Dispenser

Prepare your tape gun

Lay the packing tape dispenser on a flat surface with the wheel facing up.

Open your tape dispenser

Open the hinged section that gives access to the tape holder.

Prepare the tape roll

If you are using a new roll of tape, mark the end with a slip of paper. If your tape roll has already been started, locate the ridge that indicates the end. In both cases, pull out a short length of tape and create a tab.

Find the sticky side of the tape

The adhesive side should face outward when you place it on the roller.

Place the tape in the tape gun

Push the tape roll onto the tape dispenser wheel, ensuring it fits snugly between the roller and the metal gate while still rotating smoothly.

Thread the tape

Take the edge of the tape under and over the tension rollers. There should be directional arrows and a guide showing where to place the tape between the rollers.

Secure the leading edge of the tape

Being careful not to cut your fingers, pull a small amount of tape beyond the dispenser’s cutting blade to make it easier to grab.

Close the tape dispenser

Close the hinged section securely over the tape wheel.

Test the tape gun

Pull out a short length of tape to check that the mechanism is working smoothly.

Common Problems with Tape Guns

Tension issues

If your tape gun has a tension knob, you can adjust it to make it easier to dispense the tape. Most models have a tension knob in the centre of the wheel.

If the tape is unravelling too fast, the tension is too loose and should be tightened by turning the knob counterclockwise. Low tension can be resolved by turning the knob clockwise.

Inserting the tape incorrectly

If the sticky side of the tape faces inwards, it will stick to the machinery and prevent the rollers from turning.

Incorrect tape size

Always follow the manufacturer’s specifications for tape size, as tape that is the wrong size will not fit over the rollers properly.
